The history of acai extract can be traced back to being used by native Amazonian people from Brazil. Used for healing open wounds, the extract of acai also helped tribal members get an energy boost.

Due to its nutrition content, acai berries have always been used for healing. However, since they spoil just 24 hours after a harvest, it is only after extracts are produced that this fruit's benefits are able to reach people in other countries.

One hundred grams of extract acai extract contains over forty-four grams of fiber, thirty two grams of fat, eight grams of protein and fifty grams of carbohydrates. This berry is believed to have up to ten times the power of red grape anti-oxidants. It is currently being used for cleansing colons, weight loss and anti-aging.

The pure extract of this Brazilian berry is also known as acai berry powder. There are two different ways to get this, one is through freeze drying the acai, and the other way is to spray dry the plant.

Acai which is spray dried means that the acai is first heated to an extremely high temperature to remove the excessive moisture and sprayed with maltodextrin. The trouble with this method is that the high temperatures tend to kill the acai’s nutrition.

Another issue with using this method is that the maltodextrin reduces the ratio of concentration and even more nutrition content along with it.

Freeze drying acai berry is a better way of deriving acai extract. With this method, the berry is combined with water and left to dry naturally until it turns to powder. This method preserves the nutritional value of the berry and keeps the extract from spoiling. For this reason, acai extract that is obtained in this way is more popular.
